is there a way that I can save a powerpoint project to cd?

In 2003 use the Package for CD option. If you don't have
any media linked to the presentation, just burn the PPT
like any other data file.
 
If you have PowerPoint 2003, then you can use the package to CD option. For
earlier versions go here http://www.echosvoice.com/autoruncd.htm
