Is there a troubleshooting guide for AD DNS server and workstation login problems ?

A

Al Dykes

I've got a w2k AD domain that runs OK but twice workstations have
suddenly refused to log into the domain. (event 5719, 11187, and
others) There doesn't seem to be much information about these events.
In one case a machine can log in with all domain user IDs but one
(the one I want to use, of course).

Beyond proving that the workstation points to the server's DNS and
that the server is a simple forwarder for external name lookup is
there a document that shows what all the settings in the DNS server
should look like, and where the settings are in the workstation for a
working machine ?

Thanks

Al,

I would suggest that for basic AD Troubleshooting you install the Support
Tools. There are several utilities included with the Support Tools that
will assist you in the things that you need to do. dcdaig, netdiag,
adsiedit, repadmin, replmon and netdom are the ones that pop quickly into my
mind. The Support Tools are available in two places: on the WIN2000 Server
CD in the Support | Tools folder or on the WIN2000 Service Pack CD in the
Support | Tools folder. You can also download them from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads. I would use the Support Tools from the
Service Pack CD where possible.

There are some other utilities that are more DNS- or FRS-specific, such as
DNSLint or Sonar and Ultrasound.

Does this help you?

Opps! Forgot to mention the most basic of all TS tools for DNS - nslookup!
