Is there a reliable freeware disk repair/data recovery program?

My external back up disk gave me a boatload of 'file record unreadable'
errors in chkdsk. I did a chkdsk /f /r about 12 hours ago, it's still
processing. Once it's done (if ever) I wonder if it will really fix
anything or not? So perhaps running another specific program to make sure I
lost little?

You should D\load the test software for your Ext. harddrive and run the
tests, to ensure the drive is in good order. Then come back for recovery
software if necessary.
