I used to print from letter to A0 (43" x 47"), I have a drawer full of this
printouts, however since Oct'05 I could not print anything over 22". Does
anyone know why this was changed?

If you have ever managed to make any version of Word print a page size
larger than 22" in any direction, I'd like to know how you did it.
This size is a hard-coded maximum -- see "Maximum page height" and
"Maximum page width" in the list of limitations at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=211489. There hasn't been any
change, because Word has always been this way.

I suspect the earlier prints were made on a printer that had driver support
for enlarging Word documents.
