Is there a conflict between Access 97 and Windows XP or any XP Office program

Jack Story

I have been using an Access 97 database that I created
about 5 years ago. The database is shared between 6 users
on a peer to peer network. The database is on a separate
server. Each user has the entire Access 97 program on
his/her computer and accesses the database from the
server. It is not split.

I recently purchased a new notebook computer with Win XP
pro. I have tried to add the notebook to the network but
I cannot get Access 97 to run on the notebook if anyone
else is using the database.

I also recently purchased Access 2002 and loaded it to my
desktop computer. Immediately after that I was unable to
open the database on the desktop either. Is there a
sharing conflict between Access 97 and any XP product?

None that I know of. I used access 97 on lots of windows xp machines, and it
worked fine (and this also includes multi-user situations). In fact, the
application was extremely stable.

It is very possible that the permissions for this new notebook are
incorrect. The person using that file share needs full rights to that
directory. (that means, file delete, create rights also).

For sure the security of windows XP is way beyond that of the old windows
95/98 systems. In fact, learning and mastering the ins and outs of security
in windows xp takes MUCH MORE training then ALL OF windows 98 combined. So,
windows xp is a very complex system as compared to windows 98 security wise.

So, likely, you have some permissions problems. The other possibility is
that you are opening the file in exclusive mode by accident. Check the
setting in

tools->Options->Advanced tab

Make sure the default open mode is set to Shared, as Exclusive will only
allow one person to use the database at one time.
