Is recording a cassett tape to a CD possible?

Does the XP have an all-in-one program for recording
CD's. I have old cassett tape recordings of my son when
he was a baby trying to talk, and while growing up. I'd
like to transfer the tapes to a CD for longevity
purposes. Am I in the right place for asking this
question?

It is certainly possible -- I've transferred hundreds of hours of
books-on-tape to MP3 CDs and transferring to regular audio CDs would be even
less work. No idea if XP has the tools to do it but any audio card should
have come with sound recorder software and any CD burner should have come
with burning software and that is all you really need for the most basic
version of what you describe.

Hi, Mona.

As John said, it is certainly possible. There are several programs
available for converting analog (tapes, vinyl LPs, etc.) to digital (HD, CD,
etc.) sounds. One (TDK Digital MixMaster) came bundled with my CD-RW. And
one is the Plus! Analog Recorder, included in the Microsoft Plus! Digital
Media Edition which lists for about $20 but is often available for less.

I've used both of these programs to transfer many of my 45-year-old
(really!) LPs to CDs so that my wife can play them on her CD player in the
living room. The programs even have built-in utilities to clean up the
hisses and pops from the old records before putting the sounds onto CD. The
hardest part of this project was finding a turntable to play those old
albums! And getting the right cables to connect the turntable output to
Line In on the Sound Blaster card in my computer.

You need a method of getting then recorded to Hard disk (connecting a
player to the 'line in' of your sound card. Once on hard disk, you can
use Windows Media Player if you have nothing better to make them into
one of its 'playlists' and then burn an Audio CD.

For getting things onto disk, I suggest CD Wave, from www.cdwave.com -
shareware, I think for $10
