Is NTFS format compatible with AMD?

I just replaced my mobo and processor. Had a PII 450, went to a new mobo and
now using AMD 2800+. I can't access any of my hard drives that have win XP
pro. They are in the NTFS format and I"m wondering if that is not compatible
with the AMD chip. Any thoughts? tia

I don't believe this problem is specific to your hardware, but rather to the
fact that you have *new* hardware as the activation code initially sent to
MS is based on your computer's hardware configuration. Unfortunately, I
don't have any experience on what to do in this situation (my hardware is
ancient, too poor to upgrade), so you may want to check the KB or wait for
someone who actually knows what they are talking about to post. =) Sorry I
couldn't be of more help.

AMD is fully compatible withNTFS. Your problem is the
change from Intel PII to AMD 2800 and the mobo chipset. The
XP install with Intel loaded drivers for an Intel system and
you now have AMD.

You do a repair install which will get you the correct
drivers.

Chips and file formats have nothing to do with one another. If you reinstalled XP try typing Taking Ownership in help.

Yes, Windows XP is fully compatible with AMD chips (I use one
here). And the chip neither knows nor cares what file systems are
in use.

Look elsewhere for your problem. This isn't it.

"What do you mean by 'can't access any of my hard drives that win XP pro"?
I.e., does the PC boot into Win XP?
When you went to the new mb and Athlon, what did you do with the hard drives
from your PII pc?

This issue has absolutely nothing to do with the file system on
the hard drive, and everything to do with the completely different
hardware.

Normally, and assuming either a retail license or a generic
(non-branded) OEM license, unless the new motherboard is virtually
identical to the old one (same chipset, same IDE controllers, same
BIOS version, etc.), you'll need to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place
upgrade) installation, at the very least:

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade of Windows XP

As always when undertaking such a significant change, back up any
important data before starting.

This may also require re-activation. If it's been more than 120
days since you last activated that specific Product Key, you'll most
likely be able to activate via the internet without problem. If it's
been less, you might have to make a 5 minute phone call.

If your problem is that WinXP won't boot, I'd expect that. Did you
think you could make a huge change like replacing the MB and processor
and not run afould of MS Activation? Not only that, but if you
replaced your car engine with something completely different than what
your car ignition computer system expected, do you think the car would
start up?

Have you done a Repair Install of XP? You are going to at least do
that; you'll probably get tagged with having to re-activate as well.

The file system and processor chip are no concern of each other. But
after a major hardware change like that, the first thing you should do
is a 'repair reinstall' of the system, so it is correctly matched to the
new motherboard. Set the BIOS to boot CD before Hard disk, then boot
the XP CD, start Setup (do not take 'Repair' at this stage), then after
the license agreement take 'Repair Installation'. This will retain
your existing software installations and most settings. But Updates
will have to be run again, especially SP1;
It is important to activate the basic XP Firewall before you ever
connect to the net to get the patches, so as to be protected against
things like the BLAST worm.

You may probably find you have made so many changes that you need to
activate again by phoning in, booting initially to Safe mode, and using
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Activate Windows,
activate by phone to call the toll free number given, explain
circumstances and swap one long number for another to type in
