is my printer dead?

Got a HP-842c deskjet that's suddenly quit working. We had a power outage
last Monday, and my keyboard quit working when power was restored. I now
think possibly there was either a lightning strike somewhere that took down
the power, or a surge of some kind, as my printer quit working right after
that.

So far, I've done the following:

1. Re-booted the pc

2. unplugged the printer for awhile.

3. Uninstalled and reinstalled it in the pcs it is shared by.

4. Pushed the printer reset button repeatedly.

5. Went into the printer task que in both pcs and deleted print jobs.

It still prints several lines of garbage when connected to either pc.

Is it time to toss it out and get another printer? I don't know what else
to do.

It may be that there is a button combination to reset the electronics if it
is currently printing but printing garbage. You may want to go to the HP
website and read any documentation on the printer to see if that possibility
is available.

Additionally if you go to this site below you could e-mail HP support and
maybe they'll give you a conclusive answer in a reasonable amount of time.

A couple of other thoughts to note are if your PC seems to be running OK
except for the printer problem. If you are noticing other problems then you
might have a software corruption or even hardware failure that is
contributing to the situation. You could try a different USB port on the
computer, for example.

This one uses a parallel cable.

Good thinking. But, everything else is OK.

That printer was not all that good to begin with as far as paper
handling. A new Canon IP4300 is the one to get for around $80.00 on
sale. The text printing is good and photo printing is great. It can
print in duplex more and has dual paper feeds. Make sure you only use
Canon ink for best results.

For text Hammermill Premium Inkjet paper is great. For photo paper you
can use Canon Photo Paper Pro, Costco Kirkland (Full Sheet preferred)
Photo Glossy, Epson Premium Glossy, Epson Matte, Ilford Gallerie Classic
or Smooth Pearl. Classic is a slower dry and somewhat more fragile but
is more resistant to gas fading and is preferred for dye ink printers.

I answered this question and the answer it TOP POSTED. You can read it
with out scrolling down just like this reply. However the post I am
replying to here you would have to scroll all the way down to read the
reply. If the thread is real long then there is more scrolling.

For those who read a lot of posts it is much easier to TOP POST. But if
one want to live in the midevil times when one used dial up Compuserve
or bulletin boards then do what you want.

Does the printer self-test work?
