Is MS going crazy?

For the second time in one week, MS is releasing a Beta to the general
public without any provisos - this time, Longhorn in June.
Funnily enough, I always was under the impression that Betas were meant for
qualified MS Beta testers only, purely to try out all known possible
permutations & then provide feedback to MS for 'rethinking'.

Kelly, I'm registered at Microsoft Beta and I have Beta switched on in WU.
Would it be at all likely that I would be offered Longhorn Beta? I've
already partitioned a 5gb section of my HDD in anticipation.

And you are correct. This beta has been going on for a great while.

I have no reason to think Longhorn will be released on a general Preview
until it has had significant Technical Beta test (which has yet to be
announced to registered testers). Where did you see this report?

No. There was a Alpha, concept preview a year ago. But no formal Beta
as yet

The article states:
"...The release will be primarily aimed at developers, Montgomery said. "I
do, however, expect that you will find IT departments starting to look at
it, kick the tires, figure out what's in it and what's not in it."

If it said general public release, I missed it.
Beta testers, major partners as well as others generally get theses but not
always the public.
Time will tell.
