Josie,
Rather than deleting all types of files to speed up your startup, time each part of the
startup and post it so you can find out if it is normal or not. I have found that after a
time, the shutdown and startup times are longer. And even if you didn't load additional apps
and kept the temporary internet files deleted, it still increases those times.
You can run SFC, CHKDSK /R/F, and occasionally load I.E. over to clean up, reduce the Services
you don't need to be running, use Ad-aware, use SpyBot-S&D, use a third party defragmenter,
use a pagefile defragmenter, and a few other routines. But what ever you do, run a good AVP,
and a firewall (hardware or software or both)
Simply removing files does not necessarily clean anything. In fact it will bwoke it.

Can you tell me if its safe to delete *.bak and *.gid files from win2000
when cleaning up? I have done all other maintenance tasks but my startup is
still slow. Thanks. Josie
