Is it possible to alphabetize the Table of Contents?

I have a document in Word 2000. I have created a TOC that has hyperlinks to
the various Chapters. Ideally, I would like to do two things:

1. Alphabetize the TOC
2. Alphabetize the chapters/sections in the document

I have tried different sorts, none have worked. I am hoping to not have to
cut and paste the whole document by hand.

Thanks!

Here is what I would do...
Select the TOC, hit Ctrl+Shift+F9, hit Ctrl+Shift+N, apply the default
paragraph font from the Styles dropdown.
Then, keeping it selected, hit Table-->Convert-->Text to table using 2
columns. You don't need the table to sort, but it may help in properly
formatting your TOC. Either way, you should now be able to sort.
A TOC is a field, and you cannot sort a field to my knowledge.

Hope it helps!

Anne has told you one way to do it, but I'm wondering if what you're looking
for might not be an index (which is alphabetized automatically) rather than
a TOC.
