i am experiencing what seems to be a very severe problem
with an old computer. it is running windows 2000 and i
just recently started subscribing to dsl. when i tried
to turn it on the other day, windows would not boot and
message stating that files had been corrupted or damaged
was all i could get from it. a friend tried to wipe the
hard drive and then reinstall, but it didn't work. he
deduced that the floppy drive was being read after
turning the computer on, but not the cdrom. we also
tried to use a boot disk, but didn't get any other
results. is there anything else that can be done to get
windows working? have i physically damaged/destroyed the
hard drive?

To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000
CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute
makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the
prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

You need a step-by-step approach to solving the problem.
Start with a disk diagnositc program that boots from floppy or CD. You
should have received one with your system. Go through the hardware
diagnostics before worrying about the OS.

To boot from the CD, you have to set the boot sequence
from bios. Reboot and watch the screen closely for info
to get into bios settings.

Hope this info is useful.
