My home XP PC has been fine and running like a treat until yesterday. I went
in to check my email and "woke it" out of sleep mode - nothing. So, I
restarted it and got the log in screen (me and my partner have seperate
accounts). I put my password in and got my desktop wallpaper up but no
startmenu, icons or taskbar. Suddenly, My Docs just opened itself in the
Explorer window.

I suspected Malware or a virus so ran Adaware and AVG by browsing through
explorer to find the programs (the only way I could do anything) but nothing
was found). I checked out the event log and there were hundreds of errors
saying that "XXProgram Name HereXX hung while starting"

So I restarted in Safe Mode and god the same problem - desktop wallpaper,
explorer window but nothing else and no prompt to carry out a system restore.
Rebooted - same problem.

But then it got worse - rebooted a third time and it hung just after check
the C and D drives. Rebooted again and it hung after loading all the system
files. And now it just gets to that point and restarts itself in a loop over
and over again.

So, my question is, does this sound like a failing hard drive? Is it fried?

Auto Reboot On System Crash
http://www.theeldergeek.com/auto_reboot_on_system_crash.htm
By default, when the Windows XP operating system crashes an automatic
reboot of the system occurs. While this behavior can be convenient, the
downside is the error message accompanying the crash is not visible.
Often times this information can be a great help in troubleshooting the
source of the crash. This behavior can be modified in two ways; via the
registry or using the System Properties property sheet.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Windoze!

When Microsoft stops treating its customers as thieves, I might consider
running Windoze again. Of course, I wouldn't allow it to access the
Internet. Windoze has no place on the Internet.
