Is it a virus????

Any help would be appreciated. What I have been able to figure out is there
is something in the IE Temporary Internet Files that A. doesn't get deleted
when I try through IE, B. slows down the process of opening programs and
using Windows Explorer, and C. every time I run almost any Virus Scan
software, once that software gets to this particular folder, it forces me to
close the software. I reinstalled a couple, including Windows Defender, and
it detected nothing. Has anyone ever encountered this? Thanks for your help.

Try doing a System Restore. Just go to Start>Help and Support and on the
right side under "Pick a Task" select "Undo changes to your computer with
System Restore". Just follow the steps there. Choose a date before this
problem started.

Sorry about that, forgot to also point that out. The problem started on the
1st and for whatever reason, System Restore will not let me restore before
the 3rd! Thanks for the suggestion.

I found this on another post:

System Security Suite (3S) is a program designed to remove internet tracks
and junk files from your computer. It allows you to delete Cookies,
clear Internet Explorer Cache, delete index.dat Files, clear Typed URLs,
Windows Temp Folder and much more.

Try it out, hope it works. Let me know.

Download, install and run CCleaner.

Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
file. http://www.ik-cs.com/multi-av.htm

Thanks, tried CCleaner, no luck. The download freezes when I try to install
the previous suggestion http://www.igorshpak.net/

This is just weird. Never had a problem with this computer (less than a
year old) until this week. Can't uninstall Norton either, I don't recommend
it!

Hey David:

Thanks for the instructions, I'm going to try them, but won't be able to
tonight. I will try to let you know tomorrow if it helps. I'm not more than
intermediate with the computer stuff so I'll have to spend a little while on
it. I do appreciate and will try, and will post my results. Thanks a lot.

Try to run this in Safe Mode:
http://www.purgeie.com/delinv/index.htm
Delete the Tem and clear the debris.
You can download the Removal Norton tool from here:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
An after being sure the Computer clean install Norton back again and get the
update this time evry week or let auto update itself.
HTH.
Let us know.

Thanks everybody for your help. I'll keep it short, none of the tips worked
because every time any antivirus, including the things below, got to a
certain point and an error occurred, so Windows shut it down. Nothing helped
in safe mode. I couldn't access the folder or search for files in it, or the
same thing happened. But basically, it was the C://Documents and
Settings/Nate/Local Settings/Temp/Temporary Internet Files folder. Don't
know why that folder exists, because it's not the TIF folder that gets
deleted when you do so through IE. Well, I was able to access the "Local
Settings" folder (2 levels up) through the run function, and a couple of
times, before it closed, there was a long enough pause for me to delete
things. I deleted everything in there, until I got to the TIF folder, it
wouldn't let me. I tried again, but I quickly right clicked and changed the
name to A. How stupid is that, but at that point I could delete it. Now all
of the virus scans are working fine and accessing anything in My Computer is
going at regular speed and not slow as all hell like it was for 3 days.
Weird isn't it? Thanks for all the tips, they did help me narrow down the
folder that apparently caused the problem!
