Is it a virus, NOT able to write registry ?

I have installed an accounting software Peachtree accounting. Lately I
reinstalled it and apply the update patch from the official website.
When I tried to apply the patch, it shows error message saying that I
do not have the right to write the registry.

In fact I am using Windows XP Home edition and I have been installing
programs without any problems.

Is it a bug or a virus or just a setting I missed ?

you may have to install this when logged on as Administrator
