Is clean install allowed with Upgrade?

I have XP running today, and want to upgrade to Vista.

Question:

1. Does the upgrade version allow me to wipe out XP, and do a clean install
of Vista? or does it really truly just replace files?

2. If I purchase the upgrade disc, can I run both XP, and Vista on the same
machine as "Dual Boot"? I would like to have XP to fall back on until I am
comfortable with Vista

Have you tried a serach of this newsgroup yet? I found over 500 messages
with the word Upgrade in it.

Yes I have, thank your for wasting my time.

I want factual answers. Everything I have waded through is speculation. I
want supported facts. 475 out 500 posts is people "guessing".

I can't beleive that MS does not have this in a FAQ.

Microsoft does have a FAQ regarding this but you haven't done a search, have
you?

That is my point, hundreds of people ask the same questions over and over
and over,, etc...... but don't take the time to search for themselves.

A lot of people "waste" their time answering the same questions over and
over and over and over,, etc.....

If 475+ people are guessing, how do you know which ones are guessing and
which posts are factual? If you know this, then you shouldn't have asked
the question in the first place, you should have gone directly to Microsoft,
since you have advanced knowledge of what people know and can tell truth
from fiction.

Wow, can you buy a lottery ticket?

I did do a search you jerk. If YOU read my post, I said I searched and all
the answers seem to be from USERS who are just "GUESSING".

If you know the answer why don't you reply with it? Even if it is a link.
If they do have a FAQ answering this it sure isn't simple to find. Most
people do not have time to wade through a bunch of crap to look for answers
that should be obvious to MS to answer. This site loads slow, the Newsgroups
SUCK. They should be using a mainstream forum application such as phpBB,
WowBB, Invision. They load quicker. Spent hours in here trying to read posts
waiting for their dumb server to respond.

You can't even seem to call them to ask them "Pre-sales" questions. I don't
have time to watch stupid MS artwork load up on my screen to get an answer.

Well, DUH, how do you know they are just "GUESSING" you PUTZ?

You didn't say in your oginal post that you did a search. Only since I
mentioned it, now you say you did a search. That would have been better to
let people know you at least tried to find the answer. Oh never mind.
Hopefully someone will reply and maybe it will be a GUESS!!!

I want a post that provides documentation. By starting my own thread I get
emails when there is replies, not 500 emails from threads of "Opinions" from
various idiots.

I don't have time to sit in front of my computer and wade through comments
from idiots like you who have nothing better to do than feel obligated to
"Police" the internet.

I am sorry for posting a question on YOUR internet "Internet Cop" AKA
"Officer Moron"

Marty, Marty, Marty, it seems like you do have the time to sit in front of
your computer replying because you Keep doing it. I think you enjoy it
actually. Oh well, you need to stop being nasty or I will have to stop
replying to this thread. Be nice and play nice now. If not, I'll send my
ex-wife over there and you will never get to the computer!

Oh yea, I give you permission to continue to post on my Internet.

Regards,

Henry

Hi,

Sorry to steal the thread, but I have searched and searched for information
on this myself and have seen various different results.

I have just had a failed upgrade to Ultimate (from a full retail XP Pro). I
have done some more cleanup and gone back to try again. I noticed that
although I have the Upgrade version, there is an option to perform a clean
install. Although I haven't tried that (yet!), it does seem to contradict
some of the advice given in previous threads.

It is quite confusing. Maybe I'll report back if my second upgrade fails
and I have to try 'clean install'.

Regards
Brian.

1. Neither. You can custom install Vista and have a bit clean Vista OS.
They will leave your XP behind rolled into a .old file. It is not used in
any way to affect your Vista install.
2. No. You need two licenses to do that and an upgrade nullifies your XP
license for separate use.

I agree with you. This should have been spelled out before the release date
so people would know which version to buy. I think a lot of problems and
support calls are going to be generated because of this lack of
communication. I have searched high and low and have not seen anything that
is 100% reliable. Surely, someone has tried this by now. PLEASE POST if you
have.

I have never heard anything that says your XP license will be no good after
you upgrade. You paid for that license. It has never worked that way before
and until someone actually tries to use both and says they can't I won't
believe anything I hear. Would have been nice if MS had provided this info
in a clearly stated fashion before today. All the FAQs and KB articles I
have read have been ambiguous on this point.

It has been available for months. From the EULA

13. UPGRADES. To use upgrade software, you must first be licensed for the
software that is eligible
for the upgrade. Upon upgrade, this agreement takes the place of the
agreement for the software
you upgraded from. After you upgrade, you may no longer use the software you
upgraded from.

If you don't have the time to read the KB. Here from MS.

Start the installation from a compliant version of Windows, such as Windows
Vista, Microsoft Windows XP, or Microsoft Windows 2000. After you have
started the installation, you can select Custom at the installation choice
screen to perform a clean installation.

1. Yes. It is called the "custom install" option in Setup. It does not
permit, and does not need, format before installation.

2. No. An upgrade edition installs Vista on the system volume of the
qualifying OS replacing it and tieing its license to the Vista upgrade
edition license. The XP license is then not available for reuse. You could
only do the dual boot with a full edition of Vista.
