IPSEC Terminated

Gateway Computer
1024 memory
WinXP Home

This computer is less then 30 days old. We (Gateway and I) just did a
recovering on it. I had a IPSEC problem and HRESULT problem. Just finish
downloading the last of Windows updates. Went to Help and
Support/Tools/Advance System Information/View the error log. There it is
again.

The IPSEC Services service terminated with a following error:The attempt
operation is not supported for the type of object referenced.

I went to the knowledge site. What I read was that its for a server. I
think. Did I download the wrong updates? If I need it, how can I turn it back
on? Or if I don't, how do I tell IPSEC to stop senting error codes.

Thank you so much for your time and help

If everything is working OK you don't need ipsec on XP Home unless you are
using a l2tp VPN connection and can disable the ipsec service using
services.msc while logged on as a local administrator. You could also try
resetting tcp/ip with the netsh command as explained in the KB article below
which may repair ipsec. --- Steve

Command usage
netsh int ip reset [log_file_name]

Hi Steve

Thank you so much for your help. I had to look up what a VPN was, and now I
know. I forgot to tell you, that I a beginner at fixing computer. I did read
where you sent me. But I am afraid, it was clean as mud. I have called
Microsoft, I hope they can walk me thru it. Thank you for your help, and what
I learned thru your teaching.

Hi Diane.

Yes a VPN is called a Virtual Private Network and is typically used by
workers or home users to access their computers over the internet. If you
are not doing that then you really don't need to worry about the ipsec
errors and you can simply disable the ipsec service. You can enter
services.msc in the run box and then hit OK. Find ipsec services, then
double click it to bring up it's properties, select disabled in the drop
down box for startup type, select the stop button to stop the service, and
then hit apply. You will need to be logged on as a local administrator to do
that if you can not do it with the current user account you are logged on
as. In XP Home you can boot into Safe Mode to logon as the built in
administrator account which probably does not have a password. --- Steve

Hi Steven,

Wow, thank you. This is more than I could have ever hope for. You explain
everything, so I could understand it. Now I wish I still had that computer.
My son, who bought it for mothers day, return it to Best Buy. They in turn
give my another. I couldn't get there "geeks" to understand, that it wasn't a
hardware problem. Mircosoft never called. At least it save me, $35 . If I
am right, as soon as I started Updating WinXP, I will be getting these same
errors. Gateway doesn't believe that some is wrong with it.

Thank you so much Steven, for your time and help. I will be printing this,
just in case. Thanks
