iPod - USB 1.1?

Is anyone using the iPod with their regular USB 1.1 connection? How
slow is it?

We're buying our daughter an iPod for Christmas and I notice that it
ideally should have a FireWire or USB 2.0 connection, but I'd prefer
not to modify our daughter's PC(s) right now, since enough cost is
going to the iPod purchase.

Is the 1.1 connection something she can "limp" along with initially
until we can update her system? She has a 2-year old Dell desktop PC
and a 1-year old Dell laptop.

Thanx for your comments.

USB 1.1 will transfer much slower. However, a single MP3 is only about 3-4
MB, and that should take 5-10 seconds to transfer. If she needs to move
hundreds of MP3s though, it'll take a while.

A 1 year old Dell laptop should have a USB2.0 connection...

Cheers
Ken

A USB2 or Firewaire card isn't that expensive. I'd splurge and get one
too.

How much trouble is it for someone without much technical knowledge
to install a Firewire/USB 2.0 card themself? I imagine that my
daughter's desktop may have room, but I doubt whether the laptop does,
unfortunately.

It's typically pretty easy. Just read the instructions. As far as a laptop,
there are PCMCIA (er, PC card) adaptors out there.
