ipconfig/ vista

have win xp sp2 notebook, getting a new one with vista...how do i get vista
to set up my ipconfig ? i will not be networking the 2 as my win xp hdd is
starting to go, just need to transfer ip settings to new vista notebook and
browser/bookmarks. am new at this stuff, can this be done or no ?

In the vast majority of cases, Vista (like XP) will automatically "set up
your ipconfig". It will look for a DHCP server and get an IP address from
it, and you're ready to go.

You usually only need to change this if you are in a context where your IT
group has issued you a fixed IP address. In that case, talk to them.

If you're referring to login information, just create a new connection on
VIsta, and enter the username and password when asked. Vista will look
after the IP settings.

For the bookmarks, just go in IE to File, Import and Export. This will
allow you to export and then import the cookies and favourites.

Try the NG "microsoft.public.windows.vista.installation_setup" or
"microsoft.public.windows.vista.general".

so when i connect the ethernet adapter via cable modem, vista will find it
and set it up ? cool.

Most of the cable modems I see don't require usernames or passwords, and
will just provide an IP address to the Windows system. Plug in and go.

It's not really a great idea, however, to attach directly to a cable modem.
You should get a router and put it between your PC and the cable modem.

You may have to power cycle the cable modem to get it to give an address to
the router, but most routers sold at retail are configured for cable right
out of the box.

This will give you a significant layer of protection that you just don't
have when connected directly. And they're not expensive, and will allow
you to connect more systems to your cable modem.
