ipconfig/renew problems

I've lost my internet connection. My setup:
desktop connected to router to cablemodem - this connection does not work
laptop connected to same router (wireless) - this inet connection working

Based on suggestions to others, I tried the following:
for the desktop connection
TCP/IP set to auto

status - connected
address type - auto
IP address - 169.254.72.62
subnet - 255.255.0.0
default gateway - blank
physical adr - 00-07-95-F8-5A-B2
DNS server - blank
WINS Server - blank

clicking repair - failed: Renewing the IP address

ipconfig/all provides same info as above

ipconfig/renew -
An error occurred while renewing L A C 16 : An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket

The last event recorded:
Source - DCOM
Type - error
User - NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Desc: The server ( a very long number ) did notregister with DCOM within the required timeout.

Can't use the link provided since the desktop cannot connect.
Typing the link into the laptops browser bringsw me to a page that says
We're sorry
......

which is totally useless.

Anyone have any clues as to what is going on?

Also, (don't know if this is related) but the firwst time I tried to do the above process, XP huntg
when I clicked the details button in the status popup. Took almost 30 minutes to re-boot.

That's happened to me before, getting the failed error when clicking on
repair. I think what I did was unplug the router and the modem for a
couple of minutes, then one-by-one, plug them back in. You may need to
reboot after you do that, too.
