IPCONFIG /registerdns fails!

ipconfig /registerdns on 2 servers fails with same error

Registration of DNS records failed: The system can not find the file
specified.

The systems are already in DNS but wanted to change config on one box

Usually when I see this it can be attributed to either the network card is
either disabled, unplugged, the TCP/IP services are corrupted or lastly, you
have disabled the DHCP CLient service. That is a necessary service for this
to work and is tied into the DNS client side services, even if you have
static IPs, this services MUST be running.

If none of the above are true, are there any errors in the event logs?

Also, just as an FYI, the rules that dictate registration are is that the
Primary DNS Suffix needs to match the AD DNS domain name, and the zone name
in DNS, which has updates set to allow. If any of these are amiss, then
other errors occur. But what you;re
