ipconfig and other settings

Hi

I have a network running in one workgroup with :
1 x Win 2k - principle server and internet connection
5 x win 98 SE
1 x network printer with fixed IP address
2 x D Link 5 port hubs

This has worked fine until 2 days ago. Now none of the Win 98 pcs see the
win2k pc. Some of the win98 pcs see each other and the printer (with ping)

On the server ipconfig returns:

-----------------------------------------------------------

Windows 2000 IP Configuration
Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : lorna
Primary DNS Suffix . . . . . . . :
Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Broadcast
IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Realtek RTL8139/810X Family PCI Fast
Ethernet NIC
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-02-44-8F-C2-69
DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
Autoconfiguration IP Address. . . : 169.254.203.213
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . :

-----------------------------------------------------------
This does not look right to me but am not sure what to do next.

I have changed two NIC's, a hub which had blown and the patch lead from the
server and checked settings ad infinitum - but obviously not the right ones.

Suggestions please - I have 17 hours to get this up and running.

That is an APIPA, i.e., self-assigned, non-DHCP address.
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . :

The machine is failing to get an IP address from the
DHCP server, likely reasons for this include:

1) DHCP server is off, service is off
2) DHCP server has no scope configured, scope
is exhausted of IP addresses, not activated
3) Intervening router/switch is not propagating
client (broadcast) request -- this can happen
even with hubs if the hub is defective
4) Other hardware problems, CABLING or NIC
5) Were is domain bases (it isn't): authorization

Have you tried:

ipconfig /renew

(It will likely fail again, but several attempts might
get past a flaky hub or some such.)

Are the 9x machines getting an IP address (not one in
the self-assigned 169.254.x.y range.)
I have changed two NIC's, a hub which had blown and the patch lead from the

ones.

Well, I was expect the hub or the patch cable.

Thanks Herb

The ipconfig /renew retunes:

DHCP Servere unreachable

DHCP is enabled but where is the scope set up?

I have no other pc's switched on at present - just trying to get

satisfactory ipconfig result.

Is this the Herb Martin in (or previously of) Aberdeen?

On the DHCP server, but many small devices don't
both with the term sinced they only have (what amounts
to) one scope.

If it is handing out addresses to any machines then you
have (some type of) a scope -- or equivalent.

Then maybe the device is not turned on a a DHCP server?

Nope.
