iPAQ active sync

I have a iPAQ rz1715. It is a Pocket PC 2003 Pro w/Outlook 2002. I have
recently bought a laptop with Windows Vista. I downloaded the Sync Center
for Vista. But when I try to sync to my Pocket PC I get an error msg and it
fails. The message says Calendar, Contacts: attention required

It does not say what attention is required. I don't know what to do from
here.

I would appreciate some help.

Is that different than Pocket PC 2003 Pro? I am not familiar with the
terms, etc. This was a gift a couple of yrs ago. Are you saying that it
will not work with my machine? Also, if not, is there a way for me to sync
or is it too old?

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, Windows Mobile is the successor to Pocket PC 2003 Pro and Pocket PC
2002 Premium (which I run on my ViewSonic Pocket PC). You will need to get
the OS updated to Windows Mobile 2003 or later for it to work with Vista.
You need to contact Hewlett Packard about support, I am afraid it is not,
but worth a try.

Only work around, install VMWare Workstation which supports USB devices and
install a supported version of Windows in the VM and install Microsoft
ActiveSync then you will be able to to sync your device.

Please note, ActiveSync only works with Windows XP SP2.

I have been syncing my pocket pc 2003 XDA2i with vista using Microsoft
windows mobile device center

Is this the same as mobile sync or a different solution?

Apparently it does work with PocketPC 2003 as I use it all the time with my
HP iPaq 5555 and PocketPc 2003 ver4. If I remember correctly it does not work
with Outlook 2002 only 2003 and newer for syncing Contacts, Calendar and
Notes.

Hi. I have Vista Home Premium (Italian flavour) and IPaq 5555 (US flavour)
with MS Outllok 2003 SP3 as in your configuration but I have a strange
behaviour: the IPaq is correctly connected and I can see and manage the
folders/files but if I start the Mobile Center it starts and suddenly aborts:
no way to sync PIM data. Before leaving Vista to update itself it worked fine
then the whole IPaq disappeared and, some time ago it was back but no sync
with Outlook. What am I missing?
Thank you for your help, ciao, Massimo

Are both Windows Mobile Device Center and Sync Center both running on your
Vista computer? Also do you have Outlook 2003 or newer on your iPAQ?

You have to create a partnership between the device and computer as the
first step using USB.

With Bluetooth you need to pair the device with the computer using Blutooth
device setup as a first step also. I also hope you have the Bluetooth radio
turned on at both devices etc.

I am just guessing you have done this before using Active Sync with other
devices or computer OS's.

I would really need to know more details of your problem to be of any help.
I am just a user like you not an expert.

Hi K111. Thank you for your reply.

I have the Sync Center running but the IPaq does not show in the list where
there is just an unspecfied item. The Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC) is
not running because it aborts just after few seconds (it tries to find a
solution a couple of times and then dies). The only consequence of the WMDC
starting is that after it starts (and aborts) I can see the IPaq as a device
and its folders (main memory and Secure Digital card). I can copy and paste
files to/from the PC. I have Outlook 2003 on the PC and the Inbox mail
program that comes with Pocket PC Version 4.20.0 build 14053.

I tried to connect via Bluetooth with similar results.

When I got the computer it was running WMDC 6.0 and I have been able
establish a relationship and sync with the IPaq. When Microsoft announced the
WMDC 6.1 I downloaded and installed it with the above very bad results. I
also tried to reverse to WMDC 6.0 but nothing changed.

I was hoping in the Service Pack 1 for Vista and I installed the current
Release Candidate but nothing changed in respect of my problem.

I think I remember that there was a way to cancel the relationship between
the IPaq and the computer (my Ipaq had different relationships with different
computers in the past) but I cannot remember how to do so in on the IPaq.
This is just a shot in the dark...).

Any suggestion will be very welcome and thank you again for your help. Ciao,
Massimo

Rather than quote info in Sync Center Help files just open up Sync Center.
Right click on the partnership you want to delete and do it. You will not be
able to sync your iPAQ until you can get Windows Mobile Device Center working
properly.

I would remove WMDC programs from Control Panel/Programs and Features, then
reboot. I show two entries for WMDC in the Program list in Control
Panel/Programs and Features (The WMDC program and another for a WMDC Driver
update, 27.5mb and 42.4mb respectively both 6.1 versions). According to Help
in Sync Center you should get an automatic download and install when you
connect your device for the first time. At least that would have happened the
very first time you did it.

If you want to create another Partnership you should be able to do it at
anytime, while disconnected. If you were to change the name of your iPAQ in
the device that will probably create a new partnership and you could delete
the old one.

I would try the program install with your AV and probably Firewall disabled
as they may be interfering with it.

Wish I knew more, but all I can say is it works very well for me with my HP
laptop.

Just some thoughts for you.

Hi, I must say that I tried it all but my system still refuses to launch WMDC
correctly. I uninstalled, used unlocker to delete most of files left after
uninstall, rebooted and, even before connecting the IPaq, WMDC aborts.
Starting to be desperate. I also tried using the command "net localgroup
Administrators LocalService /add" as suggested in a different thread but I
still have the same bad results. Of course any new idea on how to solve this
problem is welcome. Thank you very much, ciao, Massimo
