Ip address not recognized

I'm new to networking. I just purchased a laptop and would like to network my
desktop with my laptop. My desktop is connected to a dsl router with wireless
capabilities and my laptop connects to the internet via this router by a
wireless card. I have tried running the network wizard, just connecting to
each computer via the run feature in windows and typing in the address and I
have also ping the IP addresses as well. When I run the wizard I get a error
message occassionally about the spool app. and I do not see the network list
in my networks. (I have service pack 1 on both computers and I'm running
Windows xp) When I ping the addresses I get "timed out". Any suggestions?
When I did ping the addresses it did recognize the router so it is connecting
with it. I am able to connect to the internet on both computers. I would
appreciate any help.

Thanks.

This is probably a problem with a misconfigured or overlooked personal firewall,
but there are other possibilities too. Start with this article:

Same work group (which is home) but when I go to view this workgroup on my
laptop it gives me the error message "Home is not accessible. you may not
have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of
this server to find out if you have access permissions. The list of servers
ifor this workgroup is currently not available"

Any ideas?
Thanks.

Windows machines do not need to be in the same Workgroup to share
files/printers. Workgroups are merely a cosmetic/organizational device.

Things to check:

1. Since you have Service Pack 1 only on both machines (and you really
should install Service Pack 2), you must be using a third-party
firewall on each computer. Configure the firewalls properly to allow
local area network traffic as trusted. Refer to the firewalls' Help
files for how to do this.

2. You don't mention whether you have XP Pro or Home on either machine.
If XP Pro, make sure that both machines have the Simple Sharing option
set the same (Folder Options>View tab). For ease, make identical user
accounts and passwords on both machines.

Well here's what I found out. The reason why I wasn't able to ping was
because of my norton. I tried to configuare it as you suggested but still
wasn't able to ping. The norton would have to be off for it to allow me to
ping. I guess I need to look into norton's help files further unless you know
other ways. I put the IP address as a trusted source and it still would not
allow me to ping the addrsses.
Second thing I found was the computer names were the same and the windows
troubleshooter suggested different names so they were changed. By doing this
I was able to see the network and the two computers on my desktop but still
unable to view them on the laptop. The laptop does list the "home" network
but does not list the two computers. It still gives me the error message that
it is unaccessible. (This is with the norton firewall off)
When I attempted to access the laptop from my desktop (main computer) it too
stated I do not have permission.
As per your suggestion I did check the folder options and they are the same.
The user name and password are the same as well.
I am running Windows professional.

I'm still stuck and still troubleshooting. I would love any other ideas or
suggestions.
Thanks

One other question, by adding the service pack 2 would it prevent some of the
issues that I'm having with the norton?

Thanks.

You should never connect to the Internet without a firewall and an
antivirus running. You didn't mention what Norton you have. If you have
Norton Internet Security, that is a firewall and you need to configure
it properly, not just disable it. Refer to the Help file that comes
with Norton or look on Symantec's website for tech support.

Service Pack 2 is an important update of the entire operating system.
Before you install SP2 you should properly prepare your computers. If
you have any questions about doing this, have a computer professional
do it for you. Applying SP2 is completely separate from any problems
you may be having with Norton.

I always have norton's internet security on while I'm on the internet but was
able to troubleshoot what was preventing me from pinging the addresses. I
certaintly will look into the website to configuare it for the networking.
Thanks for the suggestion. On a different note do you know the reason behind
the message or why I cannot see the two computers on the "home" network while
on the laptop and only on the desktop?

Thanks

Well, we've been exchanging numerous posts about why you can't see the
two computers, etc. It is probably because you've got something set up
wrong in the firewall, but remember please that the advice you get in a
newsgroup is based on information you've provided about computers that
can't be seen by the helpers.

If you just want to get it done, call a professional computer person to
come and set you up. It won't cost very much and it will get the job
done. I'm not saying this to hurt your feelings, just being practical.
