Help!! I have 2 computers both running Windows XP one is a Dell Dimensions
and the other is a Maxxpc. Each has it's own internet connection. I
connected the two computers with a crossover cable and ran the network
wizard. Everything was fine I could share files and use the printer from
both computers. Then one day I could not access either computer from the
other. This occurred after I; a) disconnected the scanner cables (from the
scanner end) and moved it 2 feet. ( the scanner is still working) and b)
installed Windows automatic updates.

The computers can still communicate to a degree with each other as they both
know when the other is switched off ( a message appears to say a network
cable is unplugged) The LAN status window shows each computer sending
packets but neither is receiving them. If I click the repair button I get a
message to say that renewing the IP address failed on both computers. I have
tried pinging each one, as in the help files, but this comes back with a
message to say they have 'timed out'.

The IP address for the MAXXPC is 169.154.25.204 and for the Dell it is
169.254.189.84 The subnet mask for both is 255.255.0.0. Please bare in mind
I am not very technically minded I just know how to use the thing, not
repair it. but I can follow instructions.

I would be very gratefull for any help

Joy,

Hoping that your problem is not from applying Windows Update, let's diagnose
your network from scratch. This may take a few tests, so please be patient.

Please provide ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.
Identify operating system (by name and version) with each ipconfig listing.

From each computer, test connectivity:
1) Ping the other by name.
2) Ping the other by ip address.
3) Ping itself by name.
4) Ping itself by ip address.
5) Ping 127.0.0.1.
Report success / failure of each test (10 tests total).

And Joy, please don't contribute to the spread and success of email address
mining viruses. Learn to munge your email address properly, to keep yourself a
bit safer when posting to open forums. Protect yourself and the rest of the
internet - never post your address unmunged.

Thanks Chuck, I will ping my computer now. What on earth is munging my email address?

Neither computer is responding to being pinged either by IP address or by name and neither is responding to its self being pinged either by name or IP address. Message is 'Request timed out' in all instances.
They both respond, however, to pinging 127.0.0.1 Message is four packets sent Four packets recieved.

Joy,

OK, the problem is not in the configuration. The 169.254.x.x addresses are
perfectly fine - and the "renewing the IP address failed" simply means that you
don't have an autoconfiguration (DHCP) server available. Each computer is on
the 169.254.0.0/16 subnet, which is OK.

You need to check the network cards. Control Panel - System - Hardware tab -
Device Manager. Then locate the network card under Network Adapters. Right
click, Properties. What shows in the Device status window?

Cheers,
Chuck

Chuck,

The device status for both says 'This device is working properly.

Something else strange is happening on both computers, which leads me to think it's connected to the networking problem; I have Symantic installed on both and when the update reminder window appears and I click remind me in xx days, about an 1/2 hour later it pops up again. This double appearance has only started at the same time as the networking problem. I have tried disabling symantic on both computers and then running the network setup wizard but it makes no difference.

Thanks for your assistance, by the way!

Glad to help, Joy. Of course, I'd be gladder if we can figure out what the
problem is. :(

Let's try something else.

What about Internet access? Is that working on both computers?

On both computers, Network Connections - Local Area Connection - Properties -
Advanced tab - Is "Protect my computer..." enabled?

From your previous post: "Neither computer is responding to being pinged either
by IP address or by name and neither is responding to its self being pinged
either by name or IP address. Message is 'Request timed out' in all
instances."

When you pinged each self by name, what ip address displayed for itself? And
when you pinged each self by ip address, what value did you use?

Please provide static route for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "route print >c:\route.txt" into the command window -
Open c:\route.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post. Identify
operating system (XP Home? Pro?) with each ipconfig listing.

Cheers,
Chuck

Yes, internet access is working on both computers and 'Protect my computer' is enabled on both. I have tried them with the firewall disabled as well but still get the same result.

Sorry for the delay but I have had a lot of work to catch up on over the past few days.

OK so first the Dell, when I ping itself with computer name 169.254.189.84 is displayed in the window.

This one is running XP Home. When I pinged this one by its own IP address I used 169.254.189.84

The MAXXpc

When pinged by its own name it displays the ip address 169.254.85.190

This one is also running XP Home

When I pinged this one I used 169.254.85.190 I know this is a different value to the one in my first communication with you but I have since run a system restore back to when the network was working. However it did not make any difference to its current status.

I have Norton Internet security installed on both computers and have been having a closer look at it. I have found I can specify individual computers that I wish to allow access to. could this programme, or the way it's set up be causing the problem?

Joy,

NIS contains a firewall. YES, if you don't identify each computer to the other,
you will have a problem. Try doing that first.

If that doesn't work, we need to resolve the ip address issue. If WE can't
consistently address each computer by ip address, I don't think the computers
will either. And NIS may take a computer name in configuring access (or may
require ip address), but it resolves the name to ip address in its database.

Cheers,
Chuck

Chuck,

I thought I had identified each computer to the other in NIS but it made no difference. I know they are trying to comunicate because I keep getting an alert window come up. Finally in an act of sheer frustration I uninstalled NIS from both computers.

Once I had done this each computer responded to pinging itself both by IP address and by computer name, but did not respond to pinging each other. Perhaps I am doing something wrong when I use the network setup wizard?

Now I'm going to reinstall NIS on one and see if it will still ping itself. :-{

I have reinstalled NIS on the Dell which now will not ping itself. Back to the drawing board!

I have been looking at the event log on the computer named 'Mainoffice' for the day the network stopped working and have found the following error report.

The master browser has received a server announcement from the computer JOY-HI31B5STCYQ that believes that it is the master browser for the domain on transport NetBT_Tcpip_{528C7BAB-649. The master browser is stopping or an election is being forced.

Can you make any sense of it? Gratefull for any help.

Joy,

OK, a master browser issue. Could help us find the problem.

The Microsoft Browstat program will show us what browsers you have in your
domain / workgroup, at any time.
<http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=188305>
<http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winntas/deploy/prodspecs/ntbrowse.mspx>

You can download Browstat from:
<http://www.dynawell.com/reskit/microsoft/win2000/browstat.zip>
<http://rescomp.stanford.edu/staff/manual/rcc/tools/browstat.zip>

Browstat is very small (40K), needs no install, and runs from the command
prompt. Just drop it onto a couple workstations, and run it.

Please provide browstat information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "browstat status >c:\browstat.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\browstat.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.
