IP address conflict

Hi,
Can anybody help me? I have no experience in networking and I am struggling
to get my home PC's networked.... This is the scenario.....

I have a desk top PC and a laptop. My desktop PC is connected to the web via
a USB modem. My idea was to get the laptop wirelessly networked so I could
surf on it. The first thing I done was buy a PCMCIA wireless card for my
laptop and a wireless router for my PC. This is where the problem started. I
brought the router off EBay and due to me having no previous experience I
brought a router which did not have a USB connection. So I though I could
connect my PC to the router via my PC's network card. The problem is when I
run the Windows network wizard on my desktop PC and specify that to be the PC
that is connected to the Web and other PC's connect via that, I get an error
on completion that the operation could not be completed due to an error has
occurred and that either other hardware or software was using the IP address
it needs.

I would appreciate any help offered.

we need more information to help.

1. Have you enable the DHCP on the router?
2. Assuming the DHCP is enabled (by default), make sure you use DHCP on the PC instead of static IP.
3. Since you don't have experience on the network, try to use DHCP for both computers.
4. To check the if the router DHCP is enabled or not, we need to know the router model. Normally, you will need to use web utility to manage the router, for example, http://192.168.1.1.
5. Posting the results of both computers' ipconfig /all may help.

ipconfig
Or you can use ipconfig /all command to find the TCP/IP settings. ... 3) If you
get "DHCP server unreachable" while using ipconfig /renew, you may want to ...

Well, it seems to me that the problem is that you need to implement ICS on
the desktop in order to share your USB modem connection. When you do that,
Windows wants to change the IP of the desktop's ethernet adapter to
192.168.0.1. ICS then acts as a DHCP allocator providing IPs to other
machines on the network. Accordingly, I think you should disable DHCP on
the router.
