Do you have a static IP address, or just a "normal" dynamic one?
Who is your ISP
Do you have a network (multiple computers connected together)
What modem do you have (Make/model)
Do you have Service Pack 2 installed? (Assuming you are on XP)
Do you have any firewall software installed?

Give as much information as you can, then it makes it a heck of a lot easier
for people to help!

Well, the Internet is definitely working - I'm on it right now. :)

What IP address do you refer to? The IP address on your XP computer? What
kind of Internet connection do you have? Are you connected directly to your
DSL/cable/modem ? What IP address do you see if you run ipconfig /all in a
command line?

Hi,
When I run IPCONFIG on command line - it shows me an IP address which is
incorrect and does not belong to my service provider. I am connected direct
through my DSL modem. I do not have any other network, just one PC. My
service provider says that your IP address is incorrect and you can not
change it as it keeps on varying with DSL connection and should be
automatically detected.

What is the IP address? If you're seeing 169.xxx.xxx.xxx, it means your NIC
isn't getting a DHCP configured address and is using an autoconfigured
address.
Did you recently install SP2? Any errors in your event logs? Did you try
reinstalling your NIC driver (from the mfr's website)? Tried a different
Ethernet cable?

Hi,
Yes, I do get an IP address starting with 169.XXX.XXX.XXX
I did not install SP2. What is a NIC driver ? How can I install it.
I remeber downloading WSFTP software and used it using my phone connection
internet service provider.

The NIC driver is the driver for your ethernet (network) card. In order to
update the driver for your NIC, you need to go to the website of the
manufacturer and download the most recent driver and install it.
