Dear Helper,

Thank you for your time and assistance.
It seems that my pc is permanently attacked by this
address 255.255.255.255 which is blocked by my Norton
Internet Security and is identified as invalid. The first
attack happens with the turning on of my computer. Could
this be an adware? I also have Norton Antivirus 2004 and
PestPatrol and they seem to detect nothing.

Thank you so much for your help!

Sincerely,
Theodora

The IP specified is a subnet-mask and is obviously invalid in this attack as no computer on the internet may have this address assigned. If your machine has a static IP and goes online automatically it is very unlikely that its coming from a spoofed source. Otherwise its probably some program that's causing this or Windows just feels like intruding itself. See Task Manager for suspicious processes, check out your registry and maybe use your creativity and see a few paths that are significant to Windows. There are not many combinations..

Hey "Windows Hater",

Thank you very much for your advice.
The thing is that I am no expert in computers but rather
an amateur. So I don't even know how to find "Task
Manager"or even my registry. I know it sounds stupid. Can
you please help me?

Thank you so much!!!!

Theo.

Your questions and problems do not sound stupid and you can take my word for it. Anybody who laughs or throws cheap insults at you for asking these types of questions is an unprofessional jackass who doesn't know anything and tries to act smart. I wasn't born with it either. I read, asked questions and just explored the product (not to mention how many times I screwed Windows up and reinstalled it while exploring - but you learn from mistakes)

To open "Task Manager" right-click on task-bar and click "Task Manager" or press CTRL + ALT + DEL (should open it unless you change the way you log on to Win2k/NT style). Registry editing maybe quite risky because you can't really restore it - its a one-way operation unless you back keys up and you will still be able to write that backup to registry later. To open the registry editor go to Start > Run, type "regedit" in the textbox and click OK.

P.S.: A solution to many of your problems including spyware, viruses/worms/trojans, constant freezing/lagging is Linux. You should give it a shot. It simply uses files to store your configuration. Microsoft probably hates to see these kinds of messages. To entertain yourself and see Windows exposed by going to http://www.deanliou.com/WinRG/ - it really is like that. =)
