"Invalid partition boot sector"

OS is Win2k. I ran norton virus-check after renewing the
subscription on the net, when i returned the pc was frozen
in mid-scan. No response to ctl-alt-del or anything. There
were error messages about being unable to write to a log
file and a connection may have been lost etc.
Eventually i switched off the pc, but then it would not
run after that. Once powered, it comes up with a black
screen & error message :
"Invalid partition boot sector, press any key to restart
loading operating system"
but pressing any key just repeats the same message each
time. You also get this short low 'burrrp' sound from the
hard drive each time one presses a key.
Can anyone help ?
Thanks
