After periods of no activity, I'll come back to a blank
screen with the message "Invalid boot diskette, insert
boot diskette in a:". Is this a sign of a failing floppy
drive a:?

It might suggest that yr sys is attempting to reboot.
msg usually received when you try to boot from Floppy with no disk present.,
check yr boot order in the bios.

Your OS crashed and rebooted (configure it to NOT reboot after a crash
if you want to see the info screen). When it rebooted, you still had a
non-bootable floppy shoved in the floppy drive. So remove the floppy
and reboot.
