Sounds either like a major Windows problem, a HD problem or a RAM problem.
Assuming it is a Windows problem, go to your RUN prompt and type sfc
/scannow and hit enter. You need to have your XP disk in the drive.

If that doesn't fix it, boot off the XP CD and go to the first Repair prompt
you see and run chkdsk /r and hit enter. It takes a long time. This is more
likely than not to fix a hard disk problem but isn't 100% guaranteed to do
so.

If that doesn't work, go to your Virtual Memory settings and set it to
SYSTEM MANAGED for now.

If that doesn't work, if you have more than one ram stick, pull one out at a
time and try installing the program.

If that didn't fix it, I would suggest you wipe your disk, format it again
and then install XP again.

If none of that has helped, then get it to a tech as soon as you can but be
prepared for possible bad news.
