Internet Shortcut association

Gilbert

I tried Firefox and subsequently removed it - which was when I noticed that
an Internet Shortcut in my Quick Launch bar gave me this error message:

*This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this
action. Create an association in the Folders Options control panel.*

However, all other Internet Shortcuts in 'Favorites' worked. I tried
dragging a working shortcut from the Favorites menu to the Quick Launch bar
but it too stopped functioning.

In Folder Options > File Types there is a blank next to 'opens with' for
Internet Shortcuts.
Clicking on 'Advanced' and then 'Edit' I get the following:
Application used to perform action: rundll32.exe shdocvw.dll,OpenURL %l
The 'Use DDE' box is checked and the Application is given as: shdocvw

I used system restore to return to the day before I uninstalled Firefox -
but the Quick Launch Internet shortcut still did not work! I have again
uninstalled Firefox.
Any help appreciated.
Cheers

Your details in File Types match mine, except I have Topic: System
The blank is puzzling. Against "Opens with", I have "Shell Doc Object
and Control Library".
I really don't see why a working .url file becomes unusable just
because it is in the QLB. Do you find any difference in the
Properties of an Internet Shortcut in Favorites as opposed to the QLB?

Thanks for your prompt reply.
No, there is nothing beside 'Opens with', and there appears to be no
difference in the properties for shortcuts in Favorites or on the QLB.
I have just tried a shortcut in Favorites (it worked), dragged it to the QLB
(it didn't work) and dragged it back to Favorites (it worked again). Odd,
eh?
As I'm not a techie I really need a 'not too technical' fix.

FWIW, did you try to change the Opens With?

and I notice that the 'Extensions' column for Internet Shortcuts has [NONE]
whereas others (e.g. Windows Media File, Quicktime, etc) have extensions and
therefore an 'Opens With' which is changeable. IYSWIM.

And now I see that there are two entries for 'Internet Shortcut'
One with the [NONE] extensions, and another near the bottom of the list
under http://.

The one at the bottom for URL is the one to look at.
Check that it is as mine.
(I suspect it is)

After upgrading to XP I had a problem with Internet Shortcuts not
working. I first noticed it in Thunderbird...urls in email and
newsgroups would not open. I checked "Internet Shortcut" under "Folder
Options". Nothing was listed under "Opens With" so I clicked on
"Advanced".Nothing was listed under "Opens With" so I clicked on
"Advanced". All of the actions were listed and seemed to be configured
right. Finally I highlighted "Open" and then clicked on "Set Default".
Then I restarted my computer and now things seem to be working okay.
It's worth a try.

Thanks for that. I did try it, but the problem remained.
However, a few minutes ago, after booting up for perhaps the third time
since this morning, I suddenly got a dialog box asking if I wanted to make
IE my default browser. I was surprised as I had removed Firefox earlier and
was already using IE, but setting IE as my default browser has corrected the
problem. Doncha jes lurv compooters?
:O)
