Wish I was diving

After finally having my home network running - which, if I may say so, should
be a whole lot easier than it is - I face a weird problem: The first time
after a computer start/re-start it takes ages for IE (7.0) to start. Ages
here means: you don't need a stopwatch for timing - a sundial will just do!
I use my network - consisting of my PC and my laptop - only to synchronize
files, not to share an Internet connection (at least that's what I intended
and what I hopefully told the Wizard to do).
I found out that to cut the waiting time short I can press the good old CTR
- ALT - DEL several times and eventually the Task Manager will pop up (never
after just doing this once or twice). I then just close it again and can work
normally from this point forward.
Computer/Network information that anyone able to help may need: both
machines run XP Pro SP2, both run McAfee Security Suite 8.0, Firewall on both
machines is (or at least seems to be) configured correctly, Network is
connected through the 1394 ports on each machine, both machines have plenty
of free disk space, not top notch but reasonably fast processors, efficient
RAM. Network adapters listed in Device Manager: PC - 1394 Net Adapter and
Intel 82566DC-2 Gigabit Network Connection, Laptop - 1394 Net Adapter and
Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC. The laptop is off most of the
time but I keep the cable connected unless of course I take the laptop
somewhere.
During that 'hang' (which isn't a real hang of course) I can move the mouse
and since I can press CTR - ALT - DEL obviously the keyboard is responding.
If the mouse hovers over a desktop icon the little pop up appears telling me
what that program could do would I be able to open it (any program). If I do
not attempt to connect to the Internet other programs open normally.
I have - for reasons that are way too complicated to explain them here - 2
choices of connecting to the Internet, both of which I use (and HAVE TO):
dial-up via internal modem in each machine and broadband via an external USB
modem that I switch to either computer depending on where I need it.
Please note: I DID DO some reading on this newsgroup but could not find
anything similar to what I experience, hence no solution.
Not having the slightest doubt that one of you out there knows the solution
to this problem I thank you in advance for sharing it with me!

Hi
Your Network/Internet Topology sounds unusual.
Since you have Ethernet Network cards you should not use for networking the
1394 which is the Firewire connector.
Depending on how your system is set, it might be that when you boot it does
some other chores that are scheduled, and thus establish the
Network/Internet connection late in the process.
Your types of Internet connection, and the separate networking are
contributes to the phenomenon too.
