For the past month All of a sudden my DSL speed has dropped to a crawl and
I've tried everything. I know Its not spyware or virus, I know its not the
startup programs or lack of memory or ram. I tried unpluging the modem
turning off and on nothing is changing it . I just need a fresh prespective
on what it could be maybe some thing I can tweak in XP. And yes I've tried
defrag, and disk clean up and emptying the cookies and temp internet files.
Any new ideas that could be the problem would help.

Yeah That's just it I've done all that. They have told me the same thing I
even called the manufact. and I got nothing that why I here asking.

When you say your internet is slow what do you mean exactly. In referrence
to download/upload speeds or when browsing, sending emails or all of the
above and just out of curiosity who is your isp?

Go to http://www.dslreports.com/tools and scroll down to the bottom of
the page. Run the speed tests and the tweak test. If you make any
changes as a result of the tweak test then run the speed test again.

The speed results should be close to those that your ISP says that
your service should provide. If not then get back to the ISP and give
them the results from the speed tests.

Good luck

Although you say you have done the spyware thing, done the chkdsk, done the
virus thing, done disk cleanups, emptied TIF and cookies, etc..

Have you updated your hardware drivers from the hardware manufacturer's web
pages?

Replaced the network/usb (dependent on how you connect to the modem) cable
between your machine and the modem?

Replaced your Network Adapter (assuming you connect via network card and not
USB)?

What software did you use to scan for spyware? Did you do it in Safe Mode
as well?

Did you use an external application to scan for viruses?

Do you have a Cable/DSL router between yourself and the internet? What
happens if you connect directly to the modem if you do? You may have to
power off the modem for a bit before you connect up - to clear any MAC
address memory.

Have you done any registry tweaks/hacks? Can you undo them?

Could be a defective modem..
Make your Internet Service provider come out and check their lines.
If you lease the modem from them, demand a replacement modem.

I hav ethe same speed porblem, I've done all usual file cleanup, etc, In my
case when I execute the internet explorer the first 3 page changes moce fast
after that it slows down to a crawl. IS there any other type of fixes I'm
not considering?

How much RAM memory? Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring Task Manager and
select the Performance Tab. What is the Total,Commit Charge and the
Peak?

How large is your hard drive? Is it partitioned? How much free space on
each drive / partition. How is the drive formatted -FAT32 or NTFS. To
get this information whilst in Windows Explorer place the cursor on the
drive, right click and select Properties.

What is your CPU speed?

Look in the Application section of Event Viewer for Errors or Warnings
over the last week and post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer. When researching the
meaning of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and
Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;enus;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message(email) and do a paste into the body of
the
message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after
exiting from Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.
