Internet keeps disconnecting

Everytime im on the internet I keep losing my connection.
I think this may be due to a virus. I tried to download
some security patches and and other windows updates but by
the time it gets a tenth of the way through installing my
internet disconnects itself.

Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S im using XP and im dont know wot IE version im using
and i cant check cos im at work.

Possible causes: your ISP, your phone lines inside the house, your phone
lines outside your house leading up to the central office (you go thru lots
of switches that could be faulty), your modem (especially if it is a
WinModem), your modem configuration, applications & viruses, call waiting
and special services provided by your phone company which may be faulty,
someone in the house picking up the phone, some phones or answering machines
could be faulty -- picking up when they shouldn't be.
