I am re-posting this in the hope that second time around
someone out there might have some suggestions. Four days
on and I STILL get IExplorer unable to get out onto the
Internet. Seems to load 127.0.0.0 first then redirects to
lycos search engine, but returns with 404 cannot find
page. My default home page is MSN.

I have used adware 6 to do deep searches and kill quite a
lot, also I have de-installed Nortons Internet Security
Professional and a few other minor programs.

Still no good.

Hi George,

I had the same problem with my McAfee. But is has nothing to do with the
Antivirus program. The 127.0.0.1 (or in your case.0) is the local host set
in by the Spamfilter. At least that is what my problem was. Do you have any
other Spamfilters? If so, deactivate them and try again.
Otherwise go direct to the Nortons side and send them a mail with your
problem.

I hope it helped a little

Good poimter.

I get so p*****ed with such junk coming thru that I have
a tendancy to overkill. Spamfilters do work upto a point
but like I have done sometimes you shoot yourself in the
foot with them.

I have to try to figure out what were my last moves on
Spam and reverse them. Nortons, I suspect, wont help much
because there are too many variables for them.

I'm trying to go thru a process of removing software and
checking if that fixed the problem, but it's a slow
process and I have a suspicion that there is a setting on
IE which needs to be reset, or a 'blocking' file kicking
around or even maybe a corrupt file. Just need some tools
to diagnose the problem.

Thanks anyway for replying - its nice to know that my
plea for help has been read!!!

a good website: http://www.microsoft.com/technet

I did a search in the KnowledgeBase on Internet Explorer
and found an article on how to check my settings.

Interestingly I had been investigating anonymous surfing
and discovered that they used proxy servers (having
accidentally incorrectly installing some software). Too
late, I de-installed it BUT little did I know that it had
configured IE to point to a proxy server at 127.0.0.1 port
7212 (I guess the software used that to redirect traffic).

Solution was simple - reset that to no proxy server and
thank goodness all now is ok.

Morale of my story is: don't play with software you don't
understand.
