Internet Explorer will not shut down

Internet Explorer, version 6 (or sp1 - doesn't matter)
will not shut down when I click on the red x in the
corner. The other functions, minimize, full screen, etc,
work fine, but I cannot close the program with the red
x. Also, when I go to the windows update page, it just
sits there once I reach the page, and says that it is
scanning my computer...which never happens....it
basically freezes up. I have recently removed, correctly
I might add, the blaster and wilchea viruses. I have
also tried to go to the add/remove section in the control
panel and clicked repair Internet Explorer. No help. I
even tried to unload the program and reinstall it with
the IE 6 sp1...still same problem. Any help? Thanks
