I bought a laptop with Win XP HE SP2 and IE 6 SP2 preinstalled. I am using a
dial-up connection and can connect just find to the internet. IE will not
display any page - not even MICROSOFT!
I have tried all suggestion I found on the MS site - add port, check
settings, clear cache a. s. o. nothing cure this also.
Also: I have turned of firewall and pop-up blocking, yet as I am loading a
html page (offline) the information bar comes up - 4 clicks later I finally
see the page. How do I get rid of that SP2 on my laptop?
I have another pc with the same setup, except SP1 and everything works just
fine.

Eliminate any scumware.
CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of these programs ,
download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

See
Dealing with Unwanted Malware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/cwshredder.zip
**Post your HijackThis log to
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or the Spyware forum at
http://forum.aumha.org/ for expert analysis, not here.**
Alternative download pages for Ad-Aware, Spybot, HijackThis and CWShredder
may be found on this page:

I appreciate the answer, but I would like to ask some before I try all this
spystuff. I had never been to any site, how could this stuff get on my lap?
It never worked, fresh out of the box.

I sort of did, but nevermind, I didn't think that stuff could be on my lap. I
had also tried that fix from the MS site "q305217.exe" the respoonse on my
lap was "This program requires IE 6 to be installed" duh!
I have version 6.0.2900.2180
I have tried the lspfix - nothing, I have removed firewall, pop-up,
reconfigured my dial-up - nothing. I am about to format my HDD and install XP
without that darn SP2
I am running out of options here.

Windows XP seems to have a problem with corrupting User Accounts.
After spending some considerable time configuring XP I found that some
secure sites, https://, would not display the page and the page had to be
refreshed in order to display properly.
As a first step and before attempting the tedious & labourious fixes found
on Microsoft's sites, first try what follows.
For a permanent fix, proceed as follows,
Go to Start,Control Panel,User Accounts and create a new account (Computer
Adminstrator). Note that if your original user name was in the form of
J.Frost in the original install, then create the new user account as John
Frost or similar.
Delete the original account, retaining the Files. This is important, else
you will lose all the special configuration that maybe took hours or days to
achieve.
Reboot.
Note that you can revert back to your original User Name at any time, by
reversing the above.

To all that wonder why "page cannot be displayed" :
You do not state what firewall you are using
If you are using a firewall that has a privacy setting
that may be the reason why you have the result "page cannot be
displayed" or IE is slow to find the URL or display it.
The same problem has been bugging me since I upgraded my eTrust
firewall.
I have read every post on this issue and cleaned all my spy and adware
with everything that was reccomended.
Still there was no joy till I tweaked my firewall settings.
Believe me I have little hair left!!!
I hope this helps.........

"privacy settings allow cookies, javascripts ect that so many firewalls
use as a blocking agent for ads.
So many sites now use a variety of ads and scripts.
you can also allow a site to be set in a trusted zone so that all the
blocking od various routines are bypassed and you more or less have
total access to them.

Thanks Semper; it would be quite useful if you would use the privacy
advisor and advise us about exactly what data is being blocked when you
experience the problem (yes, I did some quick research whilst awaiting your
response).

Every firewall has such a cryptic routine they make you dance to.
I used to use Norton NIS but it was such a resource hog I stopped
using it.
With it I had to go into options internet security add a site and
set up a custom setting for each site I had trouble getting to.
With eTrust you have to do the same thing just a different way to
access the controls but basically the same result.

Here is a copy/paste from the Privacy advisor in eTrust firewall:

Setting privacy protection levels
By setting the privacy protection level, you determine whether to
allow or block cookies, ads, and mobile code.

To set privacy levels:

Select Privacy|Main.

In the Cookie control area, click the slider and drag it to the
desired setting.
High Blocks all cookies except session cookies. This setting may
prevent some Web sites from loading.
Med Blocks persistent cookies and persistent cookies from tracking
Web sites. Allows cookies for personalized services.
Off Allows all cookies.

In the Ad Blocking area, click the slider and drag it to the desired
setting.
High Blocks all pop-up/pop-under and animated ads.
Med Blocks all pop-up/pop-under and animated ads. Allows banner ads.
Off Allows all ads.

In the Mobile Code Control area, select On or Off.

Click OK.

I hope this will work for you, I had my firewall (and the pop-up blocker)
completely disabled and it still would not work.

Sandi - Microsoft MVP

This is now what I need.

To enable privacy advisor:

Select privacy / main
In the cookies area, click custom.
In the privacy advisor area, turn on the show privacy advisor check box.

The next time privacy advisor is triggered, a pop up conversation balloon
will appear that says:

"Privacy Advisor
Privacy has blocked:
* Private headers" {for example}

There will also be a hyperlink that says "click here for details".

Now, please turn on privacy advisor, and when it interferes with your web
surfing, please advise EXACTLY what has been blocked as per the pop up
conversation window.
