Internet explorer gone haywire after upgrade to XP professional

I was using XP home edition (with IE.7) but needed to upgrade as I wanted to
set up remote access.

I paid a fortune for the XP Professional upgrade software, and used the
quick upgrade as described in the booklet.

It would appear that the new OS software has installed an earlier version of
IE, and when I try to use it, my screen goes bananas! The first window always
opens OK, but the problem seems to be when the website tries to either link
to another page or use a pop-up. The screen starts to flash between the
opening page and a blank second page. Eventually the task bar is filled with
several IE blank pages and I have to use C+Alt+Del to close them one by one
(seems to be the only way they respond to any command)

I tried to go to Windows update to download IE.7 to see if this would solve
the issue, but of course the thing goes haywire again when I click on
download (as explorer tries to open a new, second window).

I have also tried system restore, but this will not take me back to a point
before the upgrade.

Any ideas please?

Thanks for this - but I still have the same problem with downloading, whether
it's Firefox or IE.7.

Catch 22, when I try to download it just starts again!

Hi Andrew,
Please backup your data first then uninstall the upgrade by following these
steps here:
How to manually start the removal process to remove Windows XP

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/312569

Scroll down to How do I uninstall Windows XP?:
http://www.cs.unisa.ac.za/installXP/index.html
When you successful in doing that and got back to XP Home, uninstall the IE7
and delete the left over folders for it then try the upgrade to XP pro and
you can install the IE7 from the updates or direct from MS site here:

Thanks Nass, I will give this a try. It does look like the Explorer.6 in the
upgrade is trying to open new tabs (behaving like IE.7), this is why my first
reaction was to try to download IE.7.
