Apparently some spyware or malware has edited the registry and changed the IE settings so that the homepage and other options are grey-ed out. The spyware has been cleaned as best as possible w/ Spybot, and IE has been reinstalled, but this option is still not available. Is there a registry (security?) setting that can change this back ? TIA ...

You have probably immunized your system with Spybot,
that's why you have it grayed out. Try removing it and see
if that works for you. Spybot is great but this part
really does confuse people a lot.
