All of a sudden I can't download anything anymore. I'm not sure when it
happened but it didn't used to be a problem. The download dialog box
appears. I do have to click on my security bar and tell it to allow the
download. The program appears to download but when it is finished, the
dialog box disappears and the program is nowhere to be found. This occurs if
I click to Run the program and if I click to save it to a folder. Either way
-- it doesn't download. Can you help? Thanx!

I had a issue recently being unable to download windows updates, thought i
had security settings allowing these downloads. If you have a prog. like
McAfee,PcCillin ect. and you trust the site your trying to download from you
might consider turning them off for the download.( Leave windows firewall on)
it worked for my sys.
This might work for you
Be sure to turn your anti virus back on when finished and run a complete scan.

Are you sure it did not download or did the file name just not appear?
I have that problem with Firefox. Did you do a SEARCH of the program's
filename?

Thanks for the suggestion. My USBSTOR.inf is dated from June of this year. I
tried a few things and determined that the problem
is somehow related to my SATA drive. When I boot using an IDE drive there's
no problem. Maybe there's a problem with the WinXP files on
the SATA drive or the drive itself (maybe the mobo/drive combo doesn't like
external storage devices). I also tried a USB PCI card but
the problem persists.

My Win XP Pro Svc Pack 2 PC recognizes my USB external storage devices
(thumb drives, card readers, floppy drive, external hard drive, etc.)
but the devices will not install. Instead I get an error message, "the
driver installation file for this device is missing a necessary entry.
This may be because the INF was written for Win 95 or later". Other
devices like my webcam, printer, mouse and keyboard
work fine in the same USB ports. The external storage devices should not
require any device drivers with XP. There are many

<snip> look in your \inf folder for usbstor.inf

and see if the date is older than your other inf files...

it *might* somehow have gotten replaced...and if so...you can extract a new
copy from your XP cd

Thanks -- i tried that but it didn't work. I thought it would be a security
issue but apparently it isn't.

Thanks -- I have searched everything and the file just isn't there. The
folder I save it to is empty, it won't save on my desktop, and my searches
can't find anything on it. I'm trying to download Google Earth, but it
doens't work when I try to download anything from Microsoft either. I do
however get my automatic Windows updates and my virus and spyware updates
fine.

Success! You were right. I downloaded a replacement USBSTOR.inf file from
http://www.infdump.com and
replaced the version on my PC. When I plugged in a flash drive WinXP still
didn't like it. When I "updated" the
driver in device manager XP gave me a choice to use old USBSTOR that I
renamed to "usbstor old" or the new one.
I picked the new one and XP recognized the drive, I didn't even need to
reboot. I did the same with my other
flash drives and an external floppy drive and everything is working.

You were the only person to have a solution and that includes the help desks
of the floppy manufacturer, mobo, AMD
and the external HD enclosure. That's a lot of stuff not to have working due
to one issue.

Thanks,
Paul
