Internet Drops Out, XP says still connected.

At various and random times of the day, the internet on my machine drops out.
This was true both at the college I attended, as well as when I'm at home
(so I'm guessing it's not a network thing). The network status remains
"connected" though I'm unable to use any web applications like web browsers
or messaging clients. This usually only happens when I'm using it, though
there have been times when I've woken up to the machine in it's dead state.
I've made sure that my networking hardware isn't turning off to save power,
and I've disabled my firewall on various occasions, but have come to no
positive conclusions. Is it more likely a hardware issue or a software
issue, and is it easily solved?

Most likely a corrupt Winsock. Here's the tech article on how to repair. It even
has a download for a "Guided Help" routine which does all the work for you.

Nope...that's the procedure that fixed my problem with drop-outs. Just passing
it along.

| I downloaded and ran the guided help program (which I found to be incredibly
| cool) but unfortunately, not ten minutes later, the problem happened again.
| Any other suggestions?
