I have Windows XP. Ever since my 13 year old grandson was using my computer,
I can't access any of my web favorite shortcuts. I get a message that the
computer can't find the program used. Also the shortcut buttons on my
keyboard that I use for accessing my favorites don't work either. The web
address appears to be ok. Any ideas?

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm

Open Windows Explorer.
Go to Tools | Folder Options | File Types.
Scroll down to URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol (NOT URL:Internet Shortcut)
and select it.
Click Edit or Advanced, depending on your Windows version.
Select 'open'.
Click Edit.

"Application used to perform this action" should read:

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\iexplore.exe" -nohome
(Check the path to iexplore.exe to make sure that is correct and use the
double quotes.)

DDE should be checked and in the boxes below it you should have:

#1:
"%1",,-1,0,,,,
#2
IExplore
#3 (blank)

#4
WWW_OpenURL

URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy should be the same.

Sometimes it is necessary to uncheck Use DDE.

If that doesn't fix it, go to Start | Run and type

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

I may have given the wrong advice.

URL:Internet Shortcut should be

rundll32.exe shdocvw.dll,OpenURL %l

Martha,

Click Start, Run and type INETCPL.CPL
Select the Programs tab
Click Reset Web Settings
Click Yes, and click OK to close the dialog.

Then, type in Start, Run:

regsvr32 /i shdocvw.dll

Other options:

Use the "Set Program Access and Defaults" feature in Add/Remove Programs
applet, and set Internet Explorer as the default browser.

or

Apply the .URL association fix from here:

Never let grandkids play on your personal PC.
