I have recently purchased a new PC for home use. I have transferred my
broadband (cable modem) to the new system.

The connection works for a limited time then displays the message "cannot
find server".

The modem is still saying it is connected.

The machine needs to be re-started before it will establish a connection.

Any help gratefully received

If your modem is connected using USB - set the USB to not shut down to save
power.
In Device Manager, set the power options for the USB Root Hubs.

Thanks but the modem is not connected via USB

It is a cable modem thus pugs into the network port

Go to device manager..right click your NIC and on the power management tab
uncheck allow the computer to turn off this dervice to save power.
