internet connection troubles

i have a new computer hooked up in an office space. the old computer
at that space worked fine with the wireless router and had internet
function. with the new computer i cannot get the router to work.
other computers in our location are working fine on their routers. any
ideas?

perhaps my trouble is with configuring internet connections as i have
another internet connection related problem.

i have another computer (that was also working fine with the
internet---this one through a ethernet cable). this computer had a
malfunction with the operating system---i repaired the operating system
but in the mean time i lost my previously installed programs, the
documents that had been on the computer were lost and the internet
connection no longer works. 1---is it possible to recover the
documents---i tried to do a recovery but could not. i also searched
for * .doc files and found none of the older ones.
2-- how can i re-configure the internet with this computer.

it seems i have a hard time navigating the internet connection and
control areas of the computer. we have dsl internet options here with
about 20 computers on a peer to peer network. most access internet
through the ethernet cables, a few are on wireless routers

What exactly do you mean by recovery?

The document recovery depends on how you repaired the previous installation.
If you formatted the drive and installed from there, they are pretty much
gone; there are some data recovery options but they are limited if you've
been using the system. If you didn' t do that, search again from the root
of the drive. They may be under another account folder.

In Explorer, go to Tools, Folder Options, Vew, and turn ON "show hidden
files and folders"

The Agent Ransack search utility is *much* faster than the XP one:

For the internet connection, if you are connecting through a router, you
should do two things. First, establish that the adapters, wired and
wireless, are installed properly and do have TCP/IP installed and properly
configured. Normally, this just means that they are set to automatically
get an address from the router. It helps if you can connect wired to test
this. Once you connect with the wire, open a command prompt and issue the
following two commands:

ipconfig /release

ipconfig /renew

Note the space before the /, it's important. The first command should
produce IP addresses of 0.0.0.0. The second one should bring you a valid
address from the router. If you see the word "autoconfiguration" anywhere,
there is a problem. To close the command window, just type teh word "exit"
and press enter.

If there is nothing at all shown, there is likely a problem with the network
adapter installation. Check that the drivers are installed properly.

Second, for the wireless, you need to be sure that all the settings are
correct. This includes the encryption type (WEP and Open are the most
common), that they key length is correct and that the key itself is correct.
And the SSID identifying the router must be correct. Get these settings
from pretty much any other system connecting to the same wireless router.
The wireless software on your PC should have a way to set up a profile that
will let you search for wireless networks, select one, and provide the
correct passwords.

You may want to contact the person who administers the router. There may be
security features enabled (such as MAC address filtering) that may be
preventing new machines from gaining access.
