Internet connection suddenly halts every 24 hours

B

Barb Bowman

I know you've been suffering with this for a long time. Other than a
BIOS update for your motherboard, no ideas. Have you told Hitachi
that SP1 did not fix the issue? Sorry, that's the best I can do..

Barb,

Because you have been so extraordinarily helpful in helping me to attempt to
resolve this underlying Internet connection problem, I'm wondering if you
have any expert advice on another problem I'm encountering, which can be
found here:

Thanks!

Barb,

Thanks very much for at least taking a look at the situation.

An initial phone call to Hitachi proved unsuccessful because they won't work
with me directly, only through the computer manufacturer. Or rather, they
suggest that I just work through the computer manufacturer myself.

This manufacturer is going to be shipping out a brand-new 1 TB drive
tomorrow morning; I will be swapping it out for the one that's in the
computer now. The current one will be shipped off to a data recovery
company. It's the only thing that I can think of at this point. I have
about 10 GB worth of data on the hard drive that was not backed up prior to
this drive not being recognized by Vista and it's absolutely critical that I
get the data back.

Thanks again!

Barb,

The situation has now changed.

Yesterday I installed Service Pack 1 for Vista. Ever since doing so,
whenever I put the computer to sleep, upon wake-up there is no Internet
connection. Restarting the machine enables the connection to come back
perfectly. No problems upon restart.

Any further ideas?

Thanks very much!

I have disconnected the router and will try to see if the problem again
presents itself over the next couple of days.

Thanks!

Unfortunately, bypassing the router and just connecting the cable modem
directly to this desktop system did not solve the problem. After about 8
hours my Internet connection was terminated.

Immediately restarting this Vista system enabled the Internet connection to
work properly again (as usual).

Obviously the router is not the problem.

Any further suggestions from anyone would be most appreciated.

Husky86,

Does your router have a keep alive time setting option? If yes what is it
set to?
Barb Bowman said:
it's possible that the driver for the NIC was updated. you could try
going into Device Manager and rolling back the driver.

Power saving was still unchecked.
IPv6 was still unbound (unchecked).

Thanks!

Barb Bowman said:
1. recheck the power saving checkbox in device manager
2. see if IPv6 was re-enabled and unbind it again

:

Hi Barb,

I was able to make both changes:

1. I unchecked IPv6
2. I unchecked the powersaving option for the network adapter (it was
indeed
checked to be turned off for power saving).

I will keep you posted on the results.

Thanks!

:

the first thing I'd like you to try is unbinding IPv6
http://digitalmediaphile.wordpress.com/ipv6-how-to-unbind-from-a-nic-in-windows-vista/

then, go into device manager and look at the power management
properties for this adapter and make sure that "allow computer to
turn off to save power" is NOT checked.

if it is already not checked, please change your power management
scheme to high performance.

please post results -

A workaround that might work for you, and faster than rebooting your machine
is ipconfig. In your Start menu, in the Accessories folder, right click on
Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator' if this option is available,
otherwise just run Command Prompt as usual. Type ' ipconfig /release <enter>
' and then ' ipconfig /renew <enter> '. This should refresh all Dhcp leases
and my fix your problem temporarily until you can find the real source of the
problem. Or you can try enabling the network activity animation in your task
tray, then simply right click on it to disable then re-enable this
connection. You can also try disabling/re-enabling your network adapter in
Device Manager. Any errors reported in the Event Log that are network
related in any way? Anything but rebooting... that is such a pain in the
neck.
