I can only get the internet on a client machine on my
home network if I choose the set the IP address
manually. If I opt for the 'assign IP address
automatically', I can see and interact with the other
comouter on the network but no access to the internet is
available.

Normally, the client machine gets its TCP/IP configuration from the
host via DHCP:

IP Address: 192.168.0.x (1<x<255)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server = 192.168.0.1

Did you change the host's LAN IP address to something other than the
default of 192.168.0.1? That would disable host's DHCP server,
requiring a manual configuration on the client.
