internet connection sharing is not used by any apps

I have a box and a laptop, both running winxp pro sp2, version 2002.
I have connected them with crossover cable, connected the laptop to dsl
and tried to set up internet connection sharing (yeah I know connecting
desktop thru laptop is kinda stupid, I realised that just now and I
will probably rever them once I figure out how to set it up :)

So, the connection sharing is there and I see "D-Link Dialup PPP
Connection on NOUT" in my desktop network connections folder, it shows
in the systray and it is connected. I seemingly have it all set up,
except that no applications see and use the connection. Every
application works as if it were offline, I can't even ping google.

How do I make apps use this connection?

Hi Sergei,

Can you ping the host computer (name or IP)? Which computer cannot connect
to the internet host or guest? Can you ping the computer in Safe mode with
networking? Do you have any third-party firewalls? Is the guest computer
obtaining his IP automatically? Try removing and recreating ICS, using the
Network Connection Wizard.

Hi Sergei,

Yes, they can ping each other, in fact both have drives shared to each
other and that works semlessly.
Which computer cannot connect
to the internet host or guest?
Client cannot. Or well, almost cannot, read the end pls :)
Do you have any third-party firewalls?
Yes, but disabling them doesn't help, with or without ffirewall, it
works as described below.
Is the guest computer
obtaining his IP automatically? No.
Try removing and recreating ICS, using the
Network Connection Wizard.
Already tried that.

Looks like the problem is DNS.
Well, I investigated with all kinds of applications.
eMule can use internet from client computer, it cn make p2p connections
but it cannot update version, other programs don't work. Ping cannot
resolve anything but it is able to ping by ip (if I look it up from the
host computer :)), other apps don't work, thy won't connect via ip. IE
presents me with connect... dialog, so does Firefox, Thunderbird just
tells me it cannot connect.

Hi Sergei,

Try resetting the winsock on the client and the second NIC of the host. Then
test the issue by running both computers in safe mode with networking. For
resetting winsock run the following commands:

Netsh in tip reset reset.log

Netsh winsock reset

Set the DNS servers on the host to use your ISP's IP addresses or configure
the host to obtain the IP automatically. Also follow through this article
and make sure you configured both computers correctly:
