I'm a newby to this newsgroup and to XP. I'm here because I have
encountered my first problem with XP (probably a self-inflicted
problem.) I was Given an old (2001 vintage) Dell computer with its
Windows XP Pro CD. I decided I wanted a clean start on this computer,
so I formatted the hard disk and reloaded Windows XP.
Question 1 - Is there a limit on the number of times a clean start can
be made from a Windows XP CD? If so, what do you do after the magic
number has been reached?
I believe I made two mistakes during the XP installation process. I
believe I said my dialup connection was Digital, and I shouuld have
clicked Touch Tone. Secondly, I was asked whether to dial a number to
get an outside line; and I put my Area Code in this location , as I had
to do in 98SE to make it work.
Question 2: How can I, after installation has been completed, change
these settings?
I next set up a connection to my ISP (My ISP uses a phone number that
includes an area code different from my normal area code.) I then
attempted to connect to the Internet - no dialing was heard. I then
tried to connect again while listening in on the phone. I got a click,
when I attempted to connect and another click when I ended the attempt -
nothing else. I did find a page that stated that my Internet Connection
Status was "disconnected, Firewalled". I am not sure what this means.
Question 3: Any ideas about what I must do to make this Internet
connection work?
Let me know if additional information is required
Thanks in advance for any help sent my way.
