"Internet Connection" on Client has no means of disconnecting?

Just 2 XP Home machines with an RJ-45 Lan Ethernet crossover cable; dial-up connection on the Host.
I have to activate the internet connection "manually" (Win Update, Norton AV Auto-update for instance won't connect unless I do this first), but, having done so, Network Connections/Internet Gateway says I am disconnected, even though data may be flowing; I can't find how to disconnect other than physically going to the other machine and disconnecting there, which sort of misses the point of the network.
Am I missing something here please?
(On the Host I have had to uncheck "make a connection whenever another machine on the network wishes to connect to the internet" because something on the Client - Win u/d or Norton autoupdate? - keeps opening a connection which then stays open if no-one is about to spot it and manually disconnect; "disconnect if idle after ... mins" doesn't work because, as ZoneAlarm Pro tells me, there's always something out there trying the connection. Is this anything to do with the problem?)

I don't know why the Internet Gateway on the client isn't working as
advertised, but here's a program that should do what you want: install
Remote Disconnect Utility on the client and the host. Get it here,
clicking "Downloads" to access it:

You're welcome, Miles. I don't think that article is relevant. It
documents the fact that closing Internet Explorer on an ICS client
doesn't make it ask whether you want to hang up the dial-up
connection. That's because an ICS client connects to the Internet
through its local area network connection. The client doesn't know
that it's actually connecting through the host's dial-up connection.

Steve, that RDU from twiga is brilliant. All I had to do
was manually enter the IP address of the Host in the
Client dialog box on first running it. What a neat piece
of software. Thanks again for the help. You are indeed a
MVP.
